In Nipigon Bay, Lake Trout are plentiful in the 3 to 8 pound range, which are the best for eating and fun to catch on light tackle. In the deeper water we catch ample amounts of Lake Trout in the 15 pound class and bigger.
In the summer, Lake Trout generally stay deep. Their prime feeding depth is about 60 feet down. In the spring, they will be found close to the surface and prove to be a lot of fun on light action equipment. In Nipigon Bay, there are lots of islands, reefs and shoals which is perfect habitat for Lake trout. In late fall, Lake Trout come shallow again to spawn on gravel or sandy shorelines but generally don't feed as well.
